HISD School Bonds

On November 6 we are being asked to head to the polls to vote for (or against) HISD bonds. HISD is asking for for these monies in order to fund 24 new schools, renovate 184 existing schools, provide new and update existing science labs in every middle and high school as well as upgrading the existing safety and security system. How is that a bad thing? Especially when you take into consideration that they've decided not to ask for the 3% tax increase that was in the initial plans. Looking at the chart, several of the schools targeted for renovation are in our district.

Channel 2 aired a clip highlighting the deterioration of one school in the district, Jackson Middle school. Renovating schools will give students pride in their school, fostering a feeling of proprietorship in their community which in turn creates a stronger community. While we haven't had the safety concerns other schools in the district have had, updating the current system will help avoid, and conceivably deter, any problems. The science labs will also be a great addition because having access to these labs will encourage and foster interest in fields that some students may not have previously considered.

I recognize that this bond election is not without controversy. Several elected officials and community leaders feel that the election should have been held for a May election to allow more time for community feedback. I agree that feedback from the community is essential for the success of this plan but I feel that sooner, rather than later, is the best time to begin change.

As a father, supporting any plan that helps our children excel is important to me. I support the HISD bonds because it is an investment in our children, in our community. As your representative, I would work closely with the board to ensure that our district benefits from the improvements this bond election is making.

Flooding in Our District

What are the constituents views of the flooding problems plaguing our District?
I would like input on this problem from the residents of District 145. I believe that public officials should listen to the constituents and take action.
